Strong Beers Shine at SIBA
The prestigious Scotland Independent Beer Awards, run by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA), were held at the Drygate Brewery and Taproom in Glasgow in September. Traditionally judged by brewers and beer experts, the event is seen very much as the ‘brewers choice’ awards in the industry. As such, we were delighted to sponsor the Small Pack Premium Strong Beers Category, with Label Apeel's Scottish representative, Stephen Anderson, presenting the awards on the night.
Commenting on the competition, SIBA Competitions Committee Chair Guy Sheppard, who presented the awards, said: “Scottish beer continues to go from strength to strength and these awards really were a representation of the very best independent craft beers the country has to offer – the standard was especially high."
Bronze: 'Skull Splitter' from Orkney Brewery.
"Named after Thorfinn Einarsson, the 7th Viking Earl of Orkney, 'Skull Splitter' is an offering of rich, fruity, wine-like complexity with notes of fresh and dried fruits, exotic spices and light summer citrus fruits."

Gold: 'Black Cork' from Knops Beer Company.
"Black Cork is a dark beer - some might say a porter - born out of research into the historical accounts of a legendary Edinburgh beer brewed in the 18th and 19th centuries. 'Black Cork' was brewed by Bell's brewery, though the recipe and secret of brewing it seemed to have died with it's last brewer, Robert Keir, in 1837.
With thanks to the research of Robbie Pickering, Knops Beer Company have created an intensely dark beer using pale malt, crystal malt, chocolate malt, oats and malted wheat. Hops are added in 3 stages to create a prominent bitterness and hop aroma and, though we might never know the true taste of Black Cork, Knops' tribute is a worthy heir and formidable Small Pack Premium Strong Beer. Congratulations!"
