Invisible ink whisky label printing for Compass Box Gagga

Share

The Compass Box Gagga label makes an immediate impact, but not everything is visible at first.

Designed for a limited collaboration between Compass Box whisky and chef Gaggan Anand, the artwork is packed with colour, symbols and hidden handwritten messages. Its energetic surface reflects the experimental character of the whisky while leaving more for the viewer to uncover.

This label won Application Excellence – Primary Packaging at the Digital Labels & Packaging Awards 2026, recognising the way digital print was used to turn an already ambitious design into an interactive piece of primary packaging.

Building a hidden layer with invisible ink

The visible artwork is only part of the label experience. Hidden across the label is another layer, printed in invisible yellow ink and revealed under UV light. Bringing the idea into production required precise four-colour digital printing, carefully built-up applications of invisible ink and accurate registration across a limited run of 500 labels.

Under normal lighting, the hidden details remain barely visible, allowing the vibrant CMYK artwork to lead. When viewed under UV light, hidden handwritten messages and additional illustrated elements woven into the design become visible.

Building sufficient intensity into the invisible ink without disrupting the visible artwork required close control throughout production. The result is a hidden layer that remains subtle in ordinary light but appears bright and deliberate under UV, giving the label a second identity waiting to be discovered.

Texture and embellishment within a maximalist design

The whisky labels were produced on Tintoretto Gesso UWS, an uncoated paper with a lightly textured surface. The stock gives the highly illustrated design a more tactile, crafted quality than a smooth coated material would provide, while its glassine liner supports clean conversion and application.

Two contrasting hot foils introduce controlled metallic highlights across the label. These details catch the light around the illustrated artwork without flattening its colour or turning the entire design metallic.

Embossing adds physical depth to selected areas, lifting important elements from the paper and giving the bottle another layer that can be discovered through touch.

A scuff-resistant ultra-matt flood varnish completes the label. The restrained matt surface helps the brighter colours, metallic foils and UV-reactive details stand apart while protecting the complex print during handling, packing and application.

Award-winning application excellence

Compass Box Gagga demonstrates what digital print can achieve when it becomes part of the creative idea rather than simply reproducing the artwork.

Bringing these processes together accurately across a limited run of just 500 labels required close control at every stage. This combination of creativity, technical complexity and precise execution earned the project the Digital Labels & Packaging Award 2026 for Application Excellence – Primary Packaging.

For brands looking to create more impact from a limited-edition release, Compass Box Gagga shows how specialist print can add value beyond appearance. Invisible ink creates a second layer of engagement, while the textured stock, foils and embossing strengthen the premium feel and give consumers more reason to pause, explore and remember the bottle.
